General Information

A Workshop on ''Cool Stars in Clusters and Associations: Magnetic Activity and Age Indicators'' will be held in Palermo, Sicily, from May 20 to 23, 1997. It will be hosted by the Palermo Astronomical Observatory and by the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Palermo. The purpose is to bring together a number of specialists in the field to review recent developments and promote collaborative efforts in cluster research at optical, XUV and radio wavelengths.

There is a growing interest all over the world for studies of magnetic activity and age dependent phenomena in cool stars of open clusters and star forming regions. This interest is likely to increase in the near future with the opportunities offered by a new generation of optical and X-ray facilities now under development. Several groups in Europe, in the US and in Japan are actively involved in this type of research. We believe that a coordinated effort in all directions, including astrometry, photometry, high-resolution spectroscopy, and X-ray and IR astronomy, will be fruitful and mutually beneficial. By combining different expertises, and the use of a wide range of facilities, it should be possible to tackle the cluster problem in a more effective way. Exchange of information between different research groups, as well as the promotion of a coordinated approach and of collaborative efforts, are essential to this purpose.

Due to logistic reasons and the nature of the proposed workshop, the number of attendees will be limited to 50, mostly by invitation. We suggest that as a rule no more than two participants from each research group should attend the meeting, so as to ensure an international participation as large as possible.
