Education

1991 Graduate degree in Physics, University of Palermo (Italy). Title of the dissertation: "X-ray Emission at the Low-Mass End: Results from an Extensive Einstein Observatory Survey" (supervisor prof. Giuseppe S. Vaiana).
1994 Ph.D. in Physics, University of Palermo (Italy). Title of the dissertation: "Part I: Activity and lithium abundance in late type stars of the galactic disk population. Part II: Development and calibration of the AXAF-HRC UV/Ion shields" (supervisor prof. Salvatore Serio).

Research Experiences

1989-1991 Two years fellowship at the Istituto per le Applicazioni Interdisciplinari della Fisica, Palermo (National Council of Research). Subject of the research "Development of software applications on parallel distributed memory microprocessors"
1991-1992 Participation in two optical observation runs at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Cile).
1991-1993 Participation in the design and set-up of the X-ray Astronomy Calibration and Testing Facility (XACT) at OAPA, Palermo, Italy.
1994 Visiting Scientist for seven months at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (Cambridge, MA, USA) during the development program for the AXAF-HRC. Participation in the filter transmission measurements conducted at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley (Berkeley, CA, USA). Participation in the filter transmission measurements conducted at he National Synchrotron Light Source (Brookhaven, LI, USA). Participation in the acoustic tests of baseline design AXAF-HRC UV/Ion shields' samples conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, AL, USA).
1994-1997 Participation in the Design and testing of filters for the AXAF-HRC, EPIC-XMM, and JET-X.
1997 Visiting Scientist for two months at the Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, AL, USA) participating in the AXAF end to end calibration tests.
1997-1998 Visiting Scientist for one year at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (Cambridge, MA, USA), with a CNR/NATO fellowship, to participate in the development program of X-ray microcalorimeters for astrophysical and laboratory applications.
1998- Responsible for the design and set-up of the cryogenic section of the XACT facility at OAPA to operate millikelvin X-ray detectors. In charge of conducting test and calibration measurements of filters, grazing incidence optics and X-ray detectors at the XACT facility.
