A Way to Other Worlds |
Resp. Salvatore Sciortino
INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo
Given its relevance for the programme a WP will be devoted to
formation and public outreach of science activities.
The proposal includes a robust formation programme with five PhD fellowships for
each year aimed at covering the various themes of the project. The
detailed distribution of the positions among the themes will be
defined at the beginning of the activities together with their
territorial distribution in view also of the new national PhD
government rules that are become effective since 2013. This WP
will also support the organization of a national PhD school on the
exoplanet subject opened to students and young researchers.
Moreover, since the research field has a strong impact on the general public,
this WP will include also Education and Public Outreach (E&PO)
activities under the responsibility of Dr. A. Maggio. We will
supervise a public Web educational site, including resources suitable
for teaching activities in schools, templates for public conferences,
and material suitable for press releases and multimedia presentations.
We intend also to develop specific educational modules for children
to be included in the framework of ``Astrokids'', a nation-wide
joint initiative between INAF and the bookshop chain La Feltrinelli
(following an agreement signed by these two partners in 2011), and
we will produce a new cartoon of the series Giga and Stick on the
theme of extra-solar planets in collaboration with Tilapia Animation
Studios in Naples. Finally, we intend to employ this project for
studying innovative educational tools and applications based on new
technology media, such as 3-D virtual environments and smartphones;
to this aim, interest in a future collaboration was offered by
InformAmuse. For the activities foreseen by this WP we plan to hire
a fellow in the area of science communication or ICT.
Expected outcomes for the first year:
